Scholars’ Council
The Gates Scholars’ Council is a body of current scholars elected by their peers to serve for one academic year. Through its Officers, the Council represents the interests and needs of current Scholars to the Trust, Gates Alumni, the Cambridge community and the wider world.
The Council organises a number of events during the academic year, most of which are open to the wider academic community at Cambridge and include:
- Distinguished Lecture Series where recent speakers have included Ambassador Robert Holmes Tuttle, Martin Bell OBE, Mr Bill Gates Snr, Sir Richard Dearlove and Professor Stephen Hawking.
- Termly colloquia where Gates Scholars present their work to other Scholars and to the wider academic community in Cambridge.
- Orientation for new Scholars - a multi-staged programme for incoming scholars, including a three day trip to the UK’s picturesque Lake District in late September and a river cruise in London in early October.
- Regular social activities for Scholars and guests including an annual dinner, movie nights, pub meets, sporting competitions and trips to places of interest within the UK.
